What?  Wait...WHAT?! Shocked  Is this Erin in the aftermath of that cold night in Missouri??? Huh  Who are our alternative redheads?

If that is her, she lived with her grandmother...or is she visiting?  The Dungeons and Dragons thing looked like it happened in winter, this looks like late fall.  I'm sorry, even speculating as far as I did makes me feel as if I'm totally at sea here.

That's got to be the curviest of all curveballs: Erin's a William Conrad fan?

Before laguna85 asks, I'm not adding the great god Pan to the cast list. Yet.

Ok

Erin is work on a movie?

Looks like that little twerp SUMMONED something (though it doesn't properly look like any version of Pan or Bacchus--something he just dreamed up?)  That's actually better than my first thought *starts with an r* but still mightily disturbing.  And if this was something cooked up by someone she thought of as a friend, I can see why she'd be suspicious of and even vicious toward most members of the male species for quite some time after this.  Yikes!

Yes, Missouri spring is rather like other Midwest spring, which especially lately has taken on a Midsummer Night's Dream quality of all seasons at war with each other.  Last guest page looked like winter, this one looked like late fall with dead leaves haphazardly clinging to trees and barrren ground, no buds or new growth.

I think I'll take the author and artist's encapsulations of Adrian to mean that he isn't malevolent or power-drunk at this stage.

There seems to be a split in regard to Pan.  Sometimes it seems like he's almost a god of satyrs and fauns, tied to nature, playing a pipe.  However, there is the Guillermo Del Toro version.  If that actually IS Pan, that's closer to the version that the twerp conjured.  I just think this thing is a beast, though.

About the title--Spell, charm, hex, conjuring, summoning, working (all synonyms).  Is it possible that Smirking Twit actually used a "real" spell in the Dungeons and Dragons game for fun and then couldn't control the result...or tried to sick the thing on Erin?

EDIT--If that is Erin's grandmother, are her parents dead, missing, working abroad (another military brat?) or just declared unfit? Huh

Well, Diana abjured the company of men, so maybe Smirking Twerp was lashing out his repressed feelings for Erin--or was trying to perform a fertility rite and it went wrong in a horrific way.

First off, beautiful art.  Any new HMB art is always a good thing.  It's especially nice to get something new from him so soon after Con'Fused 3.

Secondly, this strip brought about the second truly WTF? reaction from SJI in a week.  I have no idea what's going on here; with a flashback to the 17th Century one strip, and now this, I'm wondering if I've been reading SJI wrong this whole time.  Am I even in the right genre?

Thirdly:  Erin (assuming it is she, which is probably a reasonable assumption) looks pretty damn beat up.  Multiple major lacerations and gashes, bloodied, etc.  We see no sign of any scarring in the 'future'.

But I have no idea what else to think.  I look forward to seeing how this is explained.

I think for this one to make sense you have to set it aside and pair it with Guest Page #3, its prequel companion piece.  It could almost be said that 139 and 140 as a pair form PK and Octavia's spin at Guest Page History, that GP #2 and #10 are episodes in Erin's backstory and that GP #7-#9 are Patrick and Miel's arc.

I'm going to presume excellent medical care for Erin to explain why there are no (physical) scars on her when we meet her.
