I'd wondered if Klara's parroting in the previous page was a typo, but it seems to be a thing. This looks very much like mind control but maybe she's like this with everyone. You can see why Adrian might have decided to come here after his break up with Echo.

If I'm reading you correctly, I know that this is the past. But 1014 onwards appears to be the story that Miriam was asking to hear in 999. It's being told to her by Jacqui and Adrian. I think Adrian already knew this story before he came to Kearsarge.
