It is hard to see the usefulness, but the tech looks a LOT older than your basic Apple II (which is where we were in '83).  So, it must predate this experiment.  In answer to your query, if this is a breeding experiment, or even if it isn't, it appears to be manipulating BOTH the young men AND the young women.  It's still unclear whose agenda we're following.
