£65,000? How much is that in real money?

By comparison, using the consumer price index, £65,000 would buy about the same as £5,350,000 today. In US dollars, that's about $8,150,000 as of today.

OK, half a crown, then?

A half-crown was a British coin worth 2 shillings, 6 pence. That would have been about three days pay of a common laborer in the period. As wages have risen faster than prices over time, you can imagine that he is flashing somewhere between a $50 and a pair of Benjamins.

QC? Silk? WTF?

QC is Queen's Council, a higher class of solicitor in England and Wales. "Coming to the silk" or "taking the silk" is another term for becoming a QC, as QCs wear distinctive silk gowns. It would have been very unusual, but not unheard-of, for a solicitor as young as Hiatt to become a QC; it would definitely be the mark of a wunderkind.
