Title: Should the character indexes include (VO) appearances?
Post by: Daphne on September 30, 2022, 05:53:42 pm
This is for the character indexes for Saint James Infirmary, An Education, and Expanded Universe.

The rules right now for including a character as "appearing" in a particular issue are:

1. The character is visible and identifiable, even if that is something like a photograph.
2. The character speaks off-panel, but would be visible if you were standing in the scene and looking around.

There's a third possibility, which we are not consistent about:

3. The character has a voice-over (that is, we see the character's speech balloon, but they're not present in the scene it's over).

Let's settle this once and for all: Should we include appearances of (VO)s in the index?

Definitely in favor of it. If there was the option to add (Voice) to the tag that would be ideal, but even without making y'all do all that extra work I think it's a good idea.

I'd vote for yes and also add:

4. Someone sends a (text) message which we see

but not include

5. Someone sends a (text) message which we don't see - it might well be a cliff hanger after all!

I'm going to say "yes", because I follow character links to remind myself of the character's participation in the story.
