So, I did the search engine dance with this title and didn't come up with an exact match.  One letter over is eitolgia or eitology--the study of the origin of a disease/condition.  The study of the origin of a pathology.  Is this anywhere close to our neighborhood now?

Unless Adrian brings up his parents (which I doubt) this could be a number of things.

It could be Claudia and a look back at the Harem of New York before the split.  It could be about the belltower and its mysterious machines (maybe seeing the beginnings of effects on new people).  We could be back to Erin and Raven (but I doubt it).  It could be Lauren, Jacqui, Dani, and Mallory having fun with perfume samples (the origin of a condition brought on by said samples).   Of course, if I missed something obvious in my search, I could be way WAY out in left field.  If I am, someone in charge please send a search party. ;)

Well, reaching way back (both in time, and into my own academic history) to some early modern philosophy, "aetiology" is the study of causation more generally, which is probably the source of why medical science might use that word for pathological origins.

ETA:  Fuck, I can be a pretentious asshole nerd sometimes.  Sorry.

Yeah, the one thing that we can say for sure about SJI is that the episode titles are never, ever pretentious. :)

I doubt it will be an origin piece as that seems to be the province of the guest issues for the most part.

Ah, but it IS an origin piece.  It seems to be about the origin of Wilmont College itself and the surrounding settlement--although if Lord Rochester created The Watch as his last act, that might also be interesting.  Perhaps a better idea of who Polly was in other contexts would help clarify some of this.

ETA--beyond my titular goof, I thought I'd mention, I don't have a dominant impression of John.  He didn't strike me as the progenitor of the Cavanaugh line or anything--and if he were...well, that would basically undermine everything positive we've thought about Adrian.  I mean arguably, even if he knew how his parents got together, and left for Wilmot to salve a broken heart with that in mind, he could have just thought it was a tall tale and then lucked out in a different way when he went looking for housing.  If he's a Rochester by birth tracing back to Lord John, he'd have to have heard of the college and might give more credence to his dad's stories.  I'm choosing to believe that he WAS unaware of what he walked into and that his motives are good, even if his problem-solving is sometimes darkly creative.

Sir John

Lord Rochester, please. Even Charles II couldn't bring himself to knight him. :)

Did I mention at any point how much I'm enjoying this thing?

We never tire of hearing it. :)

Well, this is quite a flashback.  Also is it just me or does Johnny boy strongly resemble our hero?

That pose is distracting.  I think she's distinct from Rain or Dani or Maddy, or any of the tenants of the SJI.  What are your theories?

womp womp, I was wrong about the origin.

I am impressed at how much deeper the rabbit hole always seems to go

That is good, but now we have two histories to follow.

1. The Watch and its immediate history and origin as it pertains to Dani Claudia, the absent Master of New York, and Kupler family of watchmakers.

2. John Wilmont's grand posthumous design for his legacy in what would become the Granite State--and potentially his bloodline.  Presumably the experiments in the '80s were in the spirit of the grand design, but if they were a competing vision that gives us a third definite fork.
