I'm not sure if the Daphne is getting outside help or has her own background in the language, but the conversational french always parses correctly to me, which is just an odd thing to find in general, let alone while I'm enjoying mind control porn. I really picked it up on my recent re-read of SJI as I get caught back up with where I dipped out of it before. As someone who took 13 some-odd years of immersion education in the language, the occasional moments of untranslated french always read correctly. (I can't spell out the exact grammatical niceities about adjusting the language to accomodate genedered nouns or adjusting the conjugation based on the subject, to save my life but like with english I know when there's something off). Dani's french reads quebecois as opposed to continental as well, can't say if that's bias knowing the character is supposed to be from my side of the border. Mallory's occasional french doesn't twig quite the same, but it has less of the language flip-flop that franco-canadian speaking does in my experience. |
