It does raise a question, though: if Chris and Kurt can still choose, what happens in the next generation? The rules of the magic apparently required that the bodies of the founders be maintained inside the town boundary... but somehow Chris and Kurt don't require the bodies. So I'm positing some kind of direct lineage there.

As I recollect, they didn't dump one of the sets of remains so I assume that particular one was chosen to provide the requisite lineage for our hero to retain the power - and it was theorised along the line that possession rights accumulated if the number of enabled descendents dropped so he 'inherited' them all.
