I've no idea what might be happening there though. Our glimpses of Mallory's background haven't really given us much to go on yet.

I don't think it's intended as a reveal. We know that Mallory's worried about Laurel. 972 and now this page are telling us that she's right to be worried. If it has a point, the page would seem to be contrasting everyone having fun with one person who isn't. I assume it's an introduction to a subplot that's approaching. We're 990 pages in and we still know very little about Mallory, let alone Laurel. Possibly some light is going to be shone on that backstory.
