My online-encyclopaedic knowledge of old Greek fiction tells me that in some versions, when Orpheus went into the underworld to retrieve his dead wife, he was presented only with an apparition of her. So perhaps this is a targeted distraction for Adrian. This does make me think though of the apparently dead-souled Adrian in the first of the three outcomes.
