Perhaps Penelope has had to resort to rebuilding a car rather than weaving a shroud in modern days, and equal opportunities mean that it is the girl who has been away... Everything looks used and aged, supplies are scarce, and the title character looks like she was either blown to pieces by an antitank rocket, or a building fell on her. And then there's Elle--a four-armed android would be just as useful in warfare as it would in sexual service. It's all a matter of programming.
