The Black CloudWall of Doom perfected by the Ravellas? The Spirits-fortified Hackbery Animosity? Or something else? Is there a female mirror for the Kupplers?
Title: Re: Saint James Infirmary 461: The Cave of the Sybil. Post by: macavity on December 04, 2015, 02:11:03 am Into the dragon's den... Aa far as I'm aware, a Sybil was supposed to be an Oracle. Inscrutable, yes, evil or dangerous no: five of them even made it onto the ceiling of the Cistine Chapel. Of course, their prophesy might be terrifying - if you could understand it.... Post by: GodWilling on December 04, 2015, 05:40:23 pm The spelling for the Sibyls is usually Sibyl. There is a Cave of the Sibyl in Italy.
Perhaps Ms Randall is called Sybil. Perhaps it's a Fawlty Towers reference - perhaps she's a shrew who needs taming. Perhaps she has a deceased friend who helps her out solving overdue book mysteries. I'm bound to hope that Head Librarian is favoured for a reason. Title: Re: Saint James Infirmary 461: The Cave of the Sibyl. Post by: GodWilling on December 04, 2015, 06:08:59 pm That's a shame, I was genuinely hoping for some Sybil Fawlty references. Now she's just going to be some kind of, you know, sinister character whose motives are unclear.
You can tell she's properly scary because she doesn't have a computer on her desk. Title: Re: Saint James Infirmary 461: The Cave of the Sybil. Post by: Werdna on December 04, 2015, 09:52:22 pm Quote No, more like a theoretical physicist. True story: I have known two people for whom this is a distinction without a difference. Title: Re: Saint James Infirmary 461: The Cave of the Sibyl. Post by: jmundt29 on December 04, 2015, 10:22:56 pm Do we know the names of Mallory's Happy Helpers? This is the second time we've seen them, but I don't recall her addressing them by name. Hmm.
Sybil, what age range are we talking here? Is she younger than Jacqui? ETA--I was momentarily confused on her reveal. I think she's probably a severe blonde who needs to have her grip loosened in the new climate, but I wondered if she might not be a Jamie Lee Curtis emulator for a second there. Are the other senior librarians also members of the Library Board or is this a title that Sybil chose for herself and no one wanted to question her because...it's just easier that way? Post by: jmundt29 on December 05, 2015, 08:30:17 am I'm sure my heirs thank you for that suggestion. ;D I was having a haircolor translation problem. Attitude and power are very clear, and she seems at least slightly more "mature" than Mallory, but I couldn't tell if they might have crossed paths in the Library Sciences program either as fellow students or as professor and student; or if Sybil was already well established in her position when Mallory arrived. Or if, perhaps, Sybil could have been one of Jakob's targets when he weaseled his way through Wilmot in the mid-eighties. Or if she might have been a classmate during the great Co-ed experiment of the early '80s where Pat and Miel met.
Title: Re: Saint James Infirmary 461: The Cave of the Sibyl. Post by: Daphne on December 05, 2015, 09:58:00 am Although Mallory is one of the older of the crew (I think she's the oldest after Jacqui, without looking it up), she's still pretty young. It's very likely she's the younger of the two here.
Title: Re: Saint James Infirmary 461: The Cave of the Sibyl. Post by: GodWilling on December 05, 2015, 03:36:45 pm I don't think looks are a clue to age in this comic. Perhaps modes of dress are though.
I do love how young the queen bee of the SJI looks in panel four. Title: Re: Saint James Infirmary 461: The Cave of the Sibyl. In one of Guests artist Mallory receive a letter to come work at this Library In 2013 posting Mallory was 27 and now age 30 ? Title: Re: Saint James Infirmary 461: The Cave of the Sibyl. Post by: jmundt29 on December 06, 2015, 01:56:50 am I believe she's still 27. We're less than a month after New Years' 2012 in the SJI-verse, I think. Remember, the end of the month is supposed to be Dani and Jacqui performing together at Sawyer's. That hasn't happened yet, and I'm not sure how close we are to it. It continues to be an absolutely delightful ride, though. ;D
